Celebrate Art’s Birthday with Studio XX and CKUT!

Art’s Birthday is an annual event first proposed by French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou. According to Filliou, Art was born when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water on the 17th of January. Since 1963, Art’s Birthday has been celebrated by artistic communities worldwide.

Studio XX, in collaboration with CKUT 90.3 Radio McGill, invite you to commemorate the day participating in an evening of artistic endeavours including films, musical talent, art installations by local artists and an art-cake contest.

Studio XX will showcase Wearable Resistance, an activist creation project mixing DIY electronics and second-hand clothing led by the Dutch visiting artist foundation De Geuzen during their week-long Skillshare@Studio XX October 2009. Armed with curiosity, LEDs, scissors and glue, workshop participants explored traditional handicraft to transform the body into a walking billboard, within the context of Artivistic 2009.

Studio XX warmly thanks The Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam for their generous assistance in making Studio XX’s Collective Creation Project led by De Geuzen possible.

About De Geuzen:
Based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, De Geuzen is a foundation for multi-visual research and the collaborative identity of Riek Sijbring, Femke Snelting and Renée Turner. Since 1996, they have employed a variety of techniques to explore female identity, narratives of the archive and media image ecologies. Exhibitions, workshops and online projects operate as the thematic framing devices for the group who collectively investigate and test ideas with different publics. Characterizing what they do as research, De Geuzen’s work is open-ended and values processes of exchange and critical interrogation.
