Titre forgé : Artist-in-residence | Julia Piccolo
Video on Julia Piccolo’s creative process during her residency project Glissement de compétences, from September 10th to October 21st, 2018 at Studio XX.
During her residency, the artist developed an installation exploring the links between textile and digital technologies. Inspired by Sadie Plant’s Zeros + Ones: Digital Women + the New Technoculture, the artist wished to reflect on the contribution of women throughout the history of technology, and, in particular, on the gestures associated with the preconceived ideas about women behind the Jacquard loom.
Weaving, assembling thread, and painting are actions that are deeply ingrained in the patriarchal imagination and that are associated with the world of handicrafts and female hobbies. Glissement de compétences allows us to better value these often marginalized practices and to show their ties to the still too masculine world of technology.
