How does real-time 3D change the way we relate to virtual objects? How does the interactive space transform the act of viewing into an embodied encounter? And how might artists working in real-time engines move beyond the linear logic of cinematic montage toward more spatial and durational forms of meaning-making?

As art historian Oliver Grau suggests, interactive media have “changed our idea of the image into one of a multisensory interactive space of experience with a time frame.” This hands-on workshop explores how Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) can be used to create interactive projects, focusing on the unique temporal and spatial affordances of real-time rendering, including live feedback and non-linear experience. Throughout the workshop, we will cover essential UE5 workflows, including external asset importation, lighting and materials, environment design, and basic interactions (using visual scripting). Participants will have the opportunity to build a small interactive environment on a theme of their choice. Discussions will be grounded in examples from contemporary art, games, and experimental media that use real-time engines as tools for critical and poetic worldbuilding.

No prior knowledge required. 3D modelling skills (Blender, Maya etc) an asset.

Objectives :
– Learn the fundamentals of Unreal Engine 5 by working with templates, movement, collision, and basic UI. Participants will explore core asset workflows, including importing meshes and textures.
– Focus on environment design using lighting, fog, materials, and particle systems. Participants will build a small 3D space using level editing tools, with brief discussions on cinematic cameras and spatial framing.
– Introduce basic interactivity using Blueprints — including teleports, triggers, and simple animations. Participants will also add spatialized sound to support immersion.

Prerequisites
– Be an artist, creator or professional cultural worker
– Commit to being present at all stages of the workshop
