Netukulimk, Rewilding is an augmented reality artwork where native plants take over the landscape. Once fraught with invasive species, it envisions a replenishing wildlife, spreading like giddy, happy wildflowers over an exhausted, barren habitat.
Netukulimk was created to subvert the present reality of climate collapse, to distract from feelings of despair around ecological destruction. It is a utopic overlay that asks a question, “What if we lived in a world where the ecosystem was in balance again?” Rewilding is a multi-year endeavour begun by growing a medicinal garden significant to the Zone 6A eco-region between 2020-2025. A personal connection was born between native plants, local pollinators and interspecies relationships from sky to soil. Hours gave way to many digital figurative drawings created in homage to what was planted. Each drawing was a hope for each plant to take strong root safely into the soil.
Netukulimk, is a significant Mi’kmaq philosophy that describes the inter-relationship of our species to the rest of the natural world and our innate responsibility to care for and tend to it. What if we lived in a world where we felt divinely connected to our environment, no longer separate, weaving wefts of interdependence?
As an exhibition, Rewilding is an immersive, mixed-reality biome where a speculative ecosystem takes root and evolves as visual, spatial, and sensory experience. This work invites you to imagine this future alongside the artist – to walk among the wildflowers, water avens, wild gingers, anemones and jack in the pulpits.
