At Ada X
Rather than presenting space as something to be viewed from a distance, immersive media situate the participant within the image. This hands-on workshop explores immersive practices using 360° images and video within environments in Unreal Engine 5.
Building on the principles of real-time 3D, the workshop takes a project-driven approach focused on the creation of simple immersive spaces. Participants will learn how to integrate 360° video footage into UE5, including the option of recording original live action material using 360° cameras. Additionally, they will explore how to create 360° still images and videos in both Blender and UE5.
In parallel, the workshop introduces foundational VR workflows using Unreal Engine and the Meta Quest 3. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created an immersive space that combines 360°
media with real-time interaction. We will also view our projects in VR using the Meta Quest 3 and discuss opportunities for further project development.
Throughout the workshop, discussions will be grounded in examples from contemporary art and expanded cinema.
Prerequisites
- Be an artist, creator or professional cultural worker
- Commit to being present at all stages of the workshop
- Intermediate 3D skills recommended: Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar
Day 1 – Space, Scale, and Setup
Participants will establish a UE5 environment using a template project, with emphasis on understanding scale, navigation, and first-person perspectives within virtual space. We will explore locomotion methods and spatial design considerations specific to 360° environments and VR experiences. The session will address both technical and aesthetic constraints of immersive spaces, covering asset complexity, performance optimization, and material workflows.
Day 2 – 360° Video and Image Environments
This session focuses on 360° media as foundational immersive content. Participants will learn techniques for recording and integrating 360° video footage into UE5, while also exploring the creation of 360° images, videos, and HDRIs using Blender. We will examine various methodologies for positioning and presenting 360° content within VR environments to achieve different immersive effects.
Day 3 – Interaction and Immersive Composition
Participants will implement simple interactive elements using Unreal Engine’s Blueprint system to enhance their immersive spaces. Additional external assets may be incorporated to expand and enrich the 360° environments. The workshop concludes with experiencing all projects through VR using the Meta Quest 3.
